The Hughes Fire: Evacuation Orders and Road Closures
As of late Wednesday evening, the Hughes Fire has grown to 9,400 acres and is still at 0% containment. Due to the rapid spread and unpredictable nature of the fire, evacuation orders have been issued for several areas in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Evacuation Orders and Warnings
Approximately 19,000 people are under evacuation orders, and evacuation warnings have been issued for an additional 15,000 residents. The following areas are under evacuation orders:
- Castaic
- Lake Hughes
- Val Verde
- Green Valley
- Parts of Stevenson Ranch
Evacuation warnings are in place for the following areas:
- Saugus
- Newhall
- Valencia
- Westridge
School Closures
Schools in the affected areas have been closed, including Castaic Union School District, Saugus Union School District, and the College of the Canyons. Parents are advised to pick up their children immediately from schools that are not in current evacuation zones but may be affected by smoke or changing wind conditions.
Road Closures
For the safety of emergency personnel and evacuees, several roads have been closed in the fire area, including:
- 5 Freeway, northbound lanes north of State Route 126
- 5 Freeway, southbound lanes at Grapevine Road
- Ridge Route Road at Lake Hughes Road
- Ridge Route Road at Templin Highway
- Lake Hughes Road at Pine Canyon Road
- Dry Gulch at San Francisquito Canyon Road
- Off ramps from I-5 northbound at Parker Road and Lake Hughes Road
Evacuation Centers
Evacuation centers have been established for residents who have been displaced by the fire. Small animals can be taken to the Palmdale Animal Care Center, Aguora Animal Care Center, or Lancaster Animal Care Center. Large animals can be taken to the Lancaster Animal Care Center or Pierce College.
Air Quality Alert
The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District has issued an Air Quality Alert for Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Oxnard, Piru, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, and Ventura due to smoke from the fire. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors and limit their exposure to the air.
